I honestly like both. Sniffly is cute.
I wouldn't say there has to be mess for me to be happy, but if it's there it's nice.

I am likewise into breathy buildups, ideally because the character is trying to hold back for whatever reason. I prefer allergies over colds, and I'm usually turned off by messiness.

I agree bout the build-up, those are always fantastic. And the release. I'm not much into snot or mess though, but if it's anything kinda like Big Bad Wolf-style stuff or just cute like Pinkie Pie, it's good in my book hehe

There's two basic sneeze types to me. The quick ones that happen pretty much in an instant and the ones that take a while with the long buildups. I prefer the latter.

I like the build-up, nostril flaring, sound and the release...so practically the whole sneeze itself.
